Delaware GOP Senate candidate Christine O'Donnell asked for national Republican support during a meeting on Wednesday in Washington.

O'Donnell said she asked National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) Chairman John Cornyn (Texas) for financial support in her Senate race, which she said the committee was "considering."

"I asked them to help us, but I'm very confident that if we don't, we're...doing what we need to do to win," O'Donnell said during a short press conference following an endorsement from a gunowners' rights group in Delaware.

"That's what we met about, and they're considering it, and hopefully we'll hear more about it next week," she explained.

O'Donnell is trailing Democrat Chris Coons in polls testing voters' temperature on the Nov. 2 general election, and may need as much national support as possible to successfully wage the uphill battle for Vice President Biden's former seat.

O'Donnell had bee! n seen as the weaker Republican candidate for the seat compared to Rep. Mike Castle, the centrist GOP lawmaker who'd been recruited to run for Senate. But Republicans have rallied around O'Donnell since she upset Castle in the Republican primary.

Some Republicans have offered their financial support, like former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, whose PAC gave O'Donnell $5,000. Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty's (R) PAC also plans to donate to the candidate, and some Senate Republican leaders have also aided O'Donnell's campaign from their own funds.

But Cornyn, the leader of Senate Republicans' campaign efforts, has been somewhat circumspect about O'Donnell's chances of winning, noting that it's going to be a tough race for the GOP to win.

O'Donnell said that even if the NRSC doesn't decide to pour money into the race on her behalf, she still believes she can win.

"If they don't, I'm still confident that we can win," she explained.
