postheadericon LaHood, Chaffetz share teachable moment on driving, cell phone use

Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) was modeling good cell phone behavior for his Twitter followers Monday after Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood told him not to use his phone while driving.

Chaffetz shared the anecdote on Twitter after announcing that the Department of Transportation had awarded a $500,000 grant to the city of Provo, Utah, for its airport.

"Sec LaHood called with the good news. I was driving. He told me not to drive and talk," Chaffetz tweeted.

He then found his bluetooth, the tweet said, to finish the conversation.

The Department of Transportation has made cell phone and driver safety a priority since LaHood assumed his post in 2009. Today, more than 30 states ban texting or making calls while driving.

Note: Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) also tweeted Monday about the grant for Provo.

"Just got off the phone with Secretary LaHood about a major Utah transportation project. Good news is on the way," he said, continuing later with, "DOT announced $500k for Provo Airport. I appreciated working with Mayor Curtis & other locals to make this a reality."
