postheadericon First lady to Dems: Work harder than ever

Democrats need to work "harder than ever" to help the party hold its seats in Congress, first lady Michelle Obama said Wednesday.

The first lady, who's begun to take on more of a political role in the battle over control of Congress, urged liberal activists to not let their frustration materialize into nonvoting on Nov. 2.

"We're going to need all of you to work harder than ever," Obama said in a conference call on Wednesday assembled by Organizing for America (OFA), President Obama's political operation.

The administration has been firing on all cylinders recently as part of an effort to ensure young voters, minority voters and first-time voters from 2008, who propelled Democrats to victories, will turn out again on Election Day and stave off major Republican gains in Congress.

Part of that has meant fighting disenchantment by some within the Democratic Party.

"I would urge all of you out there as you're knocking on! doors to remind people that change is difficult, and we're just beginning to see the results of our work," the first lady said. "So don't stay home; don't let frustration keep you from voting."

Mrs. Obama said likely Democratic voters staying home is the "worst possible thing" the party could encounter Nov. 2.
