postheadericon Earmark reform: Building a bridge to somewhere

Prior to 2005, it would be safe to assume 99 percent of Americans had never heard of Ketchikan, Alaska. That changed when Rep. Don Young (R-Alaska) and the late Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) steered $400 million in federal funding to build a bridge to connect Gravina Island, and its 50 residents, to Ketchikan. When completed, this colossus of construction would have been longer than the Golden Gate Bridge, and taller than the Brooklyn Bridge. This project is now well known as the frequently derided Bridge to Nowhere.
