postheadericon Ron Paul adviser says Paul, Romney in âtwo-man raceâ

Doug Wead, a campaign adviser to Ron Paul, said Wednesday that Paul sees Mitt Romney as his only real competition in the presidential race.

“This is basically now a two-man race,” Wead said on MSNBC. “That is a secret that has been hidden in plain view the past two months.”

Wead spoke the day after Paul took second place in the New Hampshire primary vote, ahead of third-place Jon Huntsman and behind Mitt Romney, a result that Wead told NPR on Tuesday was exactly what the campaign wanted.

“The conservative vote is split four ways in the Republican Party, and the liberal-moderate vote is all to Romney if Huntsman drops out,” Wead told NPR’s “All Things Considered” program. “So, we were hoping for a strong showing [by Huntsman]. We! didn’t want to give up second place. But we wanted him to do good â€" not too good â€" but it looks like he’s coming in just about perfect for us.”
