The old rule of presidential primaries was that if you exceeded or met expectations, you survived, but if you fell short, you were punished.
 
Most people don’t realize that LBJ won the New Hampshire primary in 1968, but it was Sen. Eugene McCarthy’s strong showing that caused the president to drop out of the race for a second term in office. LBJ did not meet expectations, and as a result, he knew he was toast.
