For 100 years, industry and politicians have promised Americans a technological breakthrough that would produce oil from a rock in Colorado, Wyoming and Utah.

This so-called “oil shale” has been the great Western energy hope for generations. Whenever our economy is struggling or gas prices spike, proponents spin the false promise of oil shale.

Oil shale has never been the answer to our energy woes, and that continues to be true today. I have seen this movie before. I have seen the "boom and bust" of local economies and the hype and failure of oil shale… and the spin continues.
