Surrogates for Newt Gingrich continued to batter Mitt Romney ahead of the New Hampshire primary, saying that the former Massachusetts governor would be unable to beat President Obama in a general election and would struggle to earn support from conservatives.

"I don't see how the Republican Party could nominate that guy and expect to win," said former New Hampshire Sen. Bob Smith during a conference call with reporters Thursday.

Smith said the fact that Romney was unable to build on his 2008 Iowa vote totals served as evidence that he did not have the momentum to win a general election.
