Newt Gingrich on Tuesday directed his campaign staff and supporters to run a positive campaign.

In a letter sent to staff and supporters, Gingrich wrote that from the beginning he wanted to run a positive campaign for the presidency that minimized attacks on Republicans.

"It is critical the Republican nominee emerge from this primary campaign un-bloodied, so that he or she can make the case against President Obama from a position of strength," Gingrich wrote in the letter.

Gingrich added, though, that he reserved the right to respond to attacks from other Republican candidates.
