A Newt Gingrich book signing scheduled for Friday in the nation's capital â€" the lone public campaign event for the former Speaker of the House today â€" was canceled because of safety concerns.

"A book signing featuring Newt and Callista Gingrich, originally scheduled for today at 4pm at Hudson News located within Union Station in Washington, DC, has been cancelled in order to address public safety concerns," the newsstand said in a statement.

The store is a small boutique in Washington's landmark train station, which services Amtrak, regional rail and the city's subway. Located adjacent to the Amtrak boarding gates, the location could likely have created chaos as the city's workers and tourists streamed through the area during the evening commute.
