postheadericon EPAâs risks outweigh rewards for new mercury rule

Today, the EPA is set to announce new nation-wide regulations limiting mercury emissions from electric utilities.  According to the EPA’s analysis from earlier this year, the mandated new control technologies will reduce mercury from coal-fired power plants by 90% and avoid as many as 17,000 premature deaths per year. The EPA also claims the rule will create 9,000 jobs and have annual economic benefits of up to $140 billion per year.

These enormous public benefits would seem to justify the estimated price tag of almost $11 billion per year … if they were accurate.
