House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) hammered Democrats over the potential lapse of the payroll tax cut extension Wednesday, saying that "it'll be on [Senate Majority Leader] Harry Reid's lap if the people of the country see their taxes go up" in an interview on the "Laura Ingraham Show."

Cantor attempted to deflect increasing criticism of House leadership, maintaining that he and Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) were clear in telling Senate Republicans that they wanted a yearlong extension of the tax cut. An op-ed in The Wall Street Journal that described the proceedings as a "fiasco" for the GOP was widely discussed in conservative media Wednesday.

"I was in a meeting with Leader McConnell and Speaker Boehner and we told him the House position is a year," Cantor said.
