postheadericon Women's groups slam debt-limit deal

Two women's rights organizations warned Monday they will oppose the new deficit bargain announced over the weekend because of its negative effects on women.

The National Organization for Women (NOW), the largest feminist organization in the U.S., called on the Obama administration to "stand up to the conservatives and Tea Party activists" who shaped what the group considers an unacceptable plan.

Conservatives "apparently do not care if millions suffer thanks to un-called for cuts to vital government programs," NOW President Terry O'Neill said in a press release. "We call on Congress to reject any deal that fails to require the wealthiest to pay their fair share in taxes, cut wasteful military spending, and protect programs that women rely on in these tough economic times."

O'Neill warned the plan would "disproportionately [harm] women and especially women of color."
