By creating a special “supercommittee” to define a path forward on spending and revenue decisions to meet the steep spending cuts targets outlined in the debt-ceiling agreement announced this week, Congress has taken the unprecedented and remarkable step of putting the power of the entire Congress in the hands of just 12 members.

No doubt those chosen by party leaders will understand the awesome power and responsibility they’re being handed. Let’s hope, anyway.
