postheadericon Sen. Cornyn restarts the deficit countdown

Shortly after the last three deficit-reduction supercommittee members were named Thursday, Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) started the countdown clock on the panel’s deadline.

“113 days till select committee on debt due to report,” Cornyn tweeted.

The committee has until Nov. 23 to present Congress with a deficit-reduction package making at least $1.5 trillion in spending cuts.

Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have pushed for leadership to call Congress back to Washington early from the August recess. Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) said Wednesday that the committee should tackle its task immediately, rather than waiting until September when Congress is scheduled to go back into session.

As Cornyn pointed out, the clock is already ticking.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Thursday selected Democratic R! eps. James Clyburn (S.C.), Chris Van Hollen (Md.) and Xavier Becerra (Calif.) as her appointments to the supercommittee, completing the 12-member panel.

Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) made their picks for the committee earlier in the week.
