postheadericon Sen. Corker: McConnell will pick 'supercommittee' members in next 24 hours

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) will decide which Republican senators will serve on the so-called "supercommittee" in the next 24 hours, Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) said Wednesday.

"I would love to be on it. It's something that Mitch McConnell will decide and he's going to decide in the next 24 hours and so, you know, we'll see," Corker said while speaking on local Tennessee radio station WJCW. "It's something Mitch will decide soon and we'll soon know."

As part of the legislation passed earlier this that raised the debt ceiling by $2.1 trillion while also cutting $1 trillion over ten years a 12-person joint, bicameral committee of legislators is charged with finding an additional $1.5 trillion in deficit reduction.

The top Democrats and Republicans in the House and Senate have until Aug. 16 to each choose three members for the supercommittee.

Corker's comments come a day after Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (! D-Nev.) announced his selections for the committee. Reid picked Democratic Sens. Patty Murray (Wash.), John Kerry (Mass.) and Max Baucus (Mont.). McConnell, House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) have not yet announced their selections.

On Tuesday McConnell said he was treating his selection process like a "job interview."

"I’m treating it like a j! ob interview," McConnell said according to ABC News.

He add ed that he has been talking with Republicans who would like to be on the committee.

"I asked our colleagues, our Republican colleagues, who would like to be on it," McConnell said. "And I basically sat down in person with the people who wanted to be on it, talked to them about it, and have done follow-up calls to several of them that I’m leaning toward appointing."
