postheadericon No. 3 GOPer criticizes Obama's use of Twitter

Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) said over the weekend that Republican leaders have stepped up in debt negotiations while President Obama stayed on the side-lines sending tweets.

"You cannot be the leader of the free world and sit on the sidelines and tweet and think you are going to get the job done," he said on "Fox News Sunday."

House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) "has been the leader on this," McCarthy said. "The president has stood on the sidelines and tweeted."

President Obama ramped up his social media outreach last week as both chambers of Congress voted on competing deficit proposals.

The president's official Twitter feed @BarackObama tweeted out suggestions a! ll day Friday urging followers to push specific House Republicans for a compromise on increasing the federal debt ceiling.

Later on Friday, it appeared that many of Obama's targets gained new followers who may or may not have conveyed the president's message through the microblogging platform.
