Lawmakers expressed concern and cautious optimism the morning after President Obama and congressional leaders announced an agreement to raise the debt limit by up to $2.4 trillion. This would end a long, partisan stalemate that threatened to send the nation into default.

While some Republicans said they would not vote for the new compromise, most said they believed House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) would get enough votes to pass the bill in the House.

Many lamented the late hour at which a deal was reached and the lack of political will to agree on a "grand bargain."
