postheadericon Lawmakers react to the DC earthquake

Following a magnitude 5.9 earthquake centered in Virginia on Tuesday, some lawmakers sent quick reactions via Twitter.

Capitol Police evacuated all Congressional buildings due to the earthquake, including staff in all Senate and House office buildings.

Several lawmakers tweeted that their office staff had been safely evacuated.

"My DC staff describes remarkable shaking of the Rayburn Bldg," Rep. Michael Burgess (R-Texas) tweeted. "No injuries reported."

Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) was in the midst of a town-hall meeting in Culpeper, Va., some 30 miles from the epicenter in Mineral, Va. Warner tweeted that his building was evacuated. 

"So we're doing this townhall old school style â€" out under a tree," he tweeted.

Rep. Robert Andrews (D-N.J.) tweeted that he felt the trembling in his district office in southern New Jersey.

"Light poles moving like they were on springs on Rt. 214. I was in a 7.6 in the ! Philippines as a kid, but wow!" tweeted Rep. Donna Edwards (D-Md.), who apparently was in Maryland at the time.

"Some cell service down and Metro trains are running at 15 mph post-earthquake. Investigators checking tracks," tweeted Gerry Connolly (D-Va.).

Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.) said staffers in his office felt the Capitol shake.

"My staff just experienced a major eArthquake and said they felt the Capitol sway back and forth. Thank God they are all safe," West tweeted.
