As analysis of the debt deal rages on, most commentators are convinced that deep cuts to defense are inevitable. It’s nice to think so, since the bloated defense budget has grown nearly unchecked over the last decade -â€" with the DoD failing audits and Congress so far unwilling to cut programs even the Secretary of Defense deems unnecessary.

But in the nation’s Capital, perceptions far too often have little to do with reality.
