Republican presidential candidate Jon Huntsman got some Twitter love following Thursday's tweet supporting evolution and global warming.

Huntsman's Twitter followers jumped by 4,888 in the past 24 hours, according to Twitter tracking data compiled by 2012twit. His global warming comment received 3,775 retweets, which 2012twit founders Adam and Zach Green report beats even Sarah Palin's record for retweets, a good indication that Huntsman achieved popular recognition on the topic.

“To be clear. I believe in evolution and trust scientists on global warming. Call me crazy,” Huntsman tweeted Thursday.

Huntsman had 18,212 followers as of Friday morning, which inched him a little closer in social media popularity to the other G! OP presidential candidates, many of whom have followers in the six digits.

Huntsman has previously been a sporadic but occasionally prolific tweeter. But on Thursday, after commenting on his rapid increase in followers, Huntsman seemed inspired to open up about his love of musician Captain Beefheart, joke with "The Office" TV star Rainn Wilson and tweak CNN host Piers Morgan.
