Rep. Emanuel Clever (D-Mo.) called the newly agreed upon debt-limit increase compromise to "a sugar-coated satan sandwich."

"This deal is a sugar-coated satan sandwich. If you lift the bun, you will not like what you see," Clever tweeted Monday.

Clever's tweet is one of a number of critical statements House Democrats have made in response to the deal. The compromise, announced by President Obama and congressional leaders on Sunday night, raises the debt ceiling by $2.4 trillion while cutting $1 trillion in spending over 10 years. The deal also creates a bicameral 12-person committee and includes a vote on a balanced budget amendment.

Liberal Democrats have voiced strong criticism of the deal for what they call severe entitlement cuts as well as the lack of any additional revenues in the d! eal. Democrats have decried cuts the deal makes to food safety, public health, and the Environmental Protection Agency.

"This deal trades peoples’ livelihoods for the votes of a few unappeasable right-wing radicals, and I will not support it," Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-Ariz.) said in a statement shortly after the deal was announced.
