Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced Thursday that the U.S. is planning to dedicate $17 million in additional funds to countries in the Horn of Africa region, which is battling a severe drought and food shortage.

Clinton described the humanitarian crisis, which has affected as many as 12 million people throughout Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Djibouti, as “the most severe humanitarian emergency in the world today and the worst that East Africa has seen in several decades.”

Clinton said $12 million of the new funds will be designated for Somalis, who have been hit the hardest by the crisis.
