postheadericon Cantor to visit epicenter of earthquake

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) will visit Mineral, Virginia on Wednesday, the epicenter of an earthquake that shook the East Coast a day earlier.

Mineral is in the heart of Cantor's district. His visit comes a day after a surprise 5.9 magnitude earthquake hit all along the East Coast stretching from North Carolina to New York City. The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake's epicenter was near Mineral, Va and that it struck at 1:51 p.m.

Cantor was in Israel at the time and flew back to the U.S. after he received news of the earthquake.

In Mineral, Cantor will tour a local high school, a power station, and the police department in nearby Culpeper. Cantor will tour Mineral with Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell (R).

In Washington, a number of government offices were evacuated as a result of the earthquake including the White House and the Capitol as well as the Libraries of Congress and the State Department.

Wh! ile there was mostly no reported significant damage from the earthquake, the Washington National Cathedral suffered cracking and an arch displacement. Three pinnacles fell from the cathedral as well.
