postheadericon Administration challenges Alabama immigration law

The Obama administration filed a lawsuit on Monday challenging Alabama’s recently passed immigration law.

Alabama’s new law makes several sweeping changes that “conflict with federal immigration law and undermine the federal government’s careful balance of immigration enforcement priorities and objectives,” according to a statement by the Justice Department (DOJ), which filed the lawsuit along with the State Department and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

State and local law enforcement officials, under the new law, are allowed to detain someone they suspect of being an illegal immigrant, even if stopped for an unrelated reason.

The law mandates that schools verify a student’s immigration status before enrolling them in classes, and it requires businesses in the state use a federal immigration verification program before hiring someone. It also makes it illegal for people to knowingly provide an illegal immigrant with! a ride in their vehicle.
