Surrogates for President Obama and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney (R) got into a Twitter spat on Friday over an independent Democratic group's attack on Romney.

After Priorities USA Action, a liberal group founded by alumni of the Obama administration that's free to receive and spend unlimited money, launched an ad in South Carolina attacking Romney before his visit there, aides to the Republican presidential hopeful responded harshly on Twitter to the ad.

Eric Fehrnstrom, a top adviser to Romney, tweeted:

President Obama and his team are up with their first ad of the 2012 campaign, and it's negative

Things got more testy between Bill Burton, a co-founder of Priorities USA, and Kevin Madden, a Republican consultant who handled communications for Romney's 2008 campaign for president.

It started when Madden retweeted an ABC News story about the new ad, chiding Priorities USA for excluding any mention of jobs, the issue Romney's sought to put at the forefront of his campaign. Madden tweeted:

telling: no mention of JOBS RT @jaketapper: Indie Group Run By Former Obama Staffers to Run Ad Attacking Romney > http://abcn.ws/msb9Y8

Burton chimed in:

Reco! gnizing he might have a problem, Romney campaign doesn't reference Medicare in response to our ad about Medicare.

Madden responded:

@billburton716 Recognizing PresObama has a problem on the economy/unemployment, Obama team ad doesn't mention either...

At which point Burton got in a shot:

@KevinMaddenDC that isn't a sentence.

And Madden fired back:

@billburton716 c'mon Double B- you can do better than that. At le! ast try and cover the pointspread.

The exchange could well preview some of the fights to come during the general election. Romney enjoys a small advantage at this point over other Republicans vying for the party's presidential nomination in 2012, and the administration has sized him up as one of their top challengers.
