Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) visited the tornado-ridden town of Joplin, Mo., Tuesday to make sure "assistance comes quickly," according to her Twitter account.

"On my way to Joplin,to be there with head of FEMA,making sure all assistance comes quickly, no hassle. And to thank all who are helping," McCaskill tweeted.

"You get sense of devastation through pictures, but in person the scope is overwhelming. Can't imagine pain of families who've lost loved ones," she wrote in another tweet.

McCaskill was accompanied by Sen. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) and Rep. Billy Long (R-Mo.), according to the Springfield News-Leader. A massive tornado ripped through the Missouri town on Sunday, leaving more than 100 dead.

President Obama announced Tuesday he would visit Joplin on Sunday, after he returned from his European trip, to meet with people affected by the tornadoes. Federal Emergency Management Agency Director Craig Fugate is on the ground in Missouri to assess the damage.

McCaskill's visit comes as the specter of a tough reelection campaign nears. Republicans con! sider her a top target next year.  Earlier this month Rep. To! dd Akin (R-Mo.) announced he would run for the seat, but first he faces a fierce primary battle with former State Treasurer Sarah Steelman and others.
