President Obama’s decision not to release the photo of Osama bin Laden after he was killed was the right one. Releasing the photo will do nothing to convince most doubters around the world, but it would diminish the United States and, in a strange way, further elevate Osama bin Laden in the eyes of many.

Our nation has been focused intently on Osama bin Laden for nearly ten years. For the world’s greatest power to be so single-mindedly concerned with one man certainly increased bin Laden’s stature and mystique, and with every year that passed without finding him, we were somehow less invincible, less great.
