Recently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported a dramatic decline in the incidence of central line blood stream infections â€" one of the most prevalent and most serious types of infections challenging the nation’s intensive care units.

These prevention efforts not only saved an estimated 27,000 lives and $1.8 billion in healthcare costs since 2001, they signified that we have reached an important milestone in healthcare: the knowledge, skills, best practices and technologies now exist to make major strides toward eliminating many types of healthcare-associated infections.
