postheadericon Boehner: Time to 're-engage' with Pakistan

House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) said Sunday that America needs to strengthen, not weaken, its relationship with Pakistan, and maintain its efforts in Afghanistan.

After the killing of Osama bin Laden within Pakistan, some have called for a reevaluation of the American military effort in Afghanistan, as well as the nation's relationship with the country where he was hiding for years.

When it comes to Afghanistan, Boehner said it was vital to make sure American forces did not leave until the nation was put "on a solid foundation."

"Our goal in Afghanistan is to make sure we're not ceding ground to the Taliban, Al Qaeda and others," he said on CBS's "Face the Nation." "This is not the time to just walk away from the fight. We've got an awful lot invested."

On Pakistan, he said America should work to fortify its relationship with the nation, while ensuring that Pakistan is making an equal commitment.

"They are an important alley," he s! aid. "I believe that it is time that we strengthen our relationship.

"There are some real questions that remain about their relationship with us," he added, saying it was "time to look the Pakistanis in the eye and make sure they have both feet in our camp."
