Sen. Daniel Akaka (D-Hawaii) broke two of his ribs Monday when he slipped and fell at his home in Arlington, Va., his office said Friday.

According to a spokesman, the 86-year-old will return to work next week. 

"He is recovering at home and we expect him to return to the office next week.  He is in good spirits and expected to make a full recovery," Akaka deputy communications director Jesse Broder Van Dyke said in an email. "He missed votes on Tuesday and Wednesday this week, and was unable to chair an Indian Affairs hearing yesterday."

Roughly two months ago Akaka announced his plans not to run for reelection in 2012, leaving open another seat for Democrats to defend.
