In less than a month, the people of southern Sudan are scheduled to vote by referendum on whether or not to secede from the north and become an independent country. This referendum â€" mandated by the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) â€" ended more than 22 years of war between north and south Sudan. The United States was a critical partner supporting the negotiation and signing of the CPA in 2005 and has been entrusted as a guarantor of its implementation.

As long-time advocates for peace and justice in Sudan, we’ve seen our share of frustrations and missed opportunities. Today, as Sudan stands at a crossroads, we wish to highlight both risks and key opportunities for the United States to support peace and security for the Sudanese people.
