postheadericon Reid makes good on promise to advocate of 'Don't ask' repeal

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid on Wednesday made good on a promise he made to a high-profile advocate of repealing the military's "Don't ask, don't tell" policy.

In a symbolic gesture, Reid (D-Nev.) returned a West Point ring to Iraq War veteran Lt. Dan Choi, who was discharged from the Army earlier this year for being openly gay.

{mosads}"Five months after I promised to repeal #DADT, I’m so happy to give back this West Point ring to @ltdanchoi," Reid posted on his Twitter account, including a photo of the exchange.

At the liberal Netroots Nation conference in July, Reid was given Choi's ring and, while on stage together, the majority leader pledged to return the ring to Choi once the military's ban on openly gay service members was repealed.

Choi was arrested multiple times this year for chaining himself to the White House gates in protest of the "Don't ask, don't tell" policy.

The Senate voted to repeal the ban over the weekend and President Obama signed the repeal legislation into law Wednesday.

He said that repeal would likely be implemented within the coming months.

Reid's promise in July earned him praise from the crowd of liberal activists, who have often criticized him for the slow pace of the Senate in passing legislation.
