postheadericon Poll: Low support for new Afghan war timetable

Very few people support President Obama's plan to transfer all security responsibilities to the Afghans by 2014, according to a poll released Wednesday.

Only 20 percent of respondents in a USA Today/Gallup poll agree with the 2014 withdrawal date set forth by Obama last month.

{mosads}The poll indicates that public support for the war is continuing to ebb after nine years of U.S. engagement in the mountainous, war-torn Central Asian country.

With Republicans taking over the House next year, Obama may come under pressure to keep U.S. troops in Afghanistan for an extended period of time. But many Democrats, who still control the Senate, have become increasingly frustrated with the progress of the war and would like the troops to get out faster.

Forty percent of respondents said they want troops to stay until "U.S. objectives are achieved," including 61 percent of Republicans. Thirty-eight percent, including about half of Democrats, want the troops to return home sooner.

Obama announced last December that an additional 30,000 troops would be sent to Afghanistan and set July 2011 as the date when troops will begin pulling out of the country. In November, he said that 2014 is the date at which he hopes that process is completed.

"Look, we know there are passions on every side of this," White House press secretary Robert Gibbs told USA Today. "This is not an easy tightr! ope to walk."

The poll of 1,037 adults was taken between! Nov. 19 -21 and has a margin of error of four percentage points.
