postheadericon Obama: 'Redouble our efforts' to come to a tax agreement

President Obama said Saturday that he was "very disappointed" in the Senate's failure to pass some of the Bush-era tax cuts, but vowed to work with both sides of the aisle to arrive at a compromise on the extension.

"Those provisions should have passed," Obama said of the pair of proposals that would have extended tax cuts, which expire in less than a month, on families making $250,000 or less or on incomes under $1 million.

"But with so much at stake, today's votes cannot be the end of the discussion," he said, adding the White House, Democratic and Republican leaders "need to redouble our efforts" to extend tax cuts.

"But I'm confident we can get it done," the president stressed.

"We are going to continue to work on this issue through the weekend into early next week," Obama said.
