Sen. Richard Lugar (R-Ind.) alerted followers that he was  only 57 Twitter followers away from 3,000 on Thursday.

"We're closing in!" he said. "Thanks for all the follows!"

Surpassing 3,000 followers puts him in the territory of fellow Republican senators Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) and George LeMieux (R-Fla.).

GOPers in the upper chamber that have yet to reach that mark are Sens. Pat Roberts (Kan.), Lamar Alexander (T! enn.) and Bob Corker (Tenn.).
