House lawmakers on Wednesday will consider legislation allowing orphans of the Haiti earthquake to remain permanently in the United States, according to a senior Democratic aide.

Democratic leaders had hoped to pass the uncontroversial Help Haiti Act earlier in the week, but some lawmakers were eying the proposal as a possible vehicle for a more contentious bill â€" the DREAM Act â€" offering illegal immigrant students a path to legal residency. 

Instead, Democrats will consider the Haiti bill as a stand-alone measure, the aide said. The proposal passed the House unanimously in July, but was amended by the Senate a month later, kicking the measure back to the lower chamber.
