Richard Holbrooke, the U.S. special envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan, was taken to a Washington hospital Friday after falling ill at the State Department.

"All I can tell you is that the ambassador is at the hospital at the present time and â€" and, you know, beyond that ... we'll let you know as we find out more," State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley told reporters.

Crowley said that Holbrooke fell ill in the morning on the seventh floor of the Foggy Bottom headquarters where Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's office is located.

Holbrooke has spent much of the past two years shuttling back and forth between the U.S. and the war-torn region on behalf of President Obama.
