postheadericon Van Hollen says he's finished as DCCC chairman

Rep. Chris Van Hollen (Md.) said he's finished at the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) after two terms as its chairman.

Van Hollen said he wasn't interested in serving another two years as the leader of House Democrats' campaign efforts, days after Republicans won dozens of Democratic seats in a wave election that handed control of the House to the DCCC.

"When it comes to the DCCC chairmanship, I believe in term limits," Van Hollen told liberal radio host Bill Press on Friday. "This will be the end."

During Van Hollen's tenure, Democrats added 21 seats to their majority on President Obama's coattails in 2008. But Republicans picked up 61 seats in the House on Tuesday, and could add to that total as the results are decided in a few remaining races.

The Maryland Democrat has served concurrently the last two years in a leadership capacity in the House as assistant to Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).

I! t's not clear what avenues Van Hollen might explore in the Democratic leadership team now that they're in the minority. Much of the party's leadership team could be impacted by whether Pelosi chooses to stay around and try to become minority leader.

"I think the choice is hers. She has an enormous reservoir of goodwill," Van Hollen said Friday of Pelosi's chances of staying as head of House Democrats.

Some candidates to replace Van Hollen in the 2012 cycle might include some of the DCCC's vice chairmen. Reps. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.), Steve Israel (D-N.Y.) and Joseph Crowley (D-N.Y.) are all seen as potential candidates.
