House Democratic campaign chief Rep. Chris Van Hollen (Md.) kept up a brave face at 9 p.m. Eastern, telling a reporter for NBC that it was “a mistake” for her network to call the House for Republicans.

“I think that’s a mistake. Way too early,” Van Hollen, chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, told the reporter and a group of others at party headquarters.

“We remain confident we’re going to have a strong showing and keep the majority,” Van Hollen said.

His comments came after Democrats had lost several House seats in the East to Republicans, including those held by Reps. Alan Grayson (Fla.), Tom Perriello (Va.), Rick Boucher (Va.), and Suzanne Kosmas (Fla.). Van Hollen said the early calls on those races were expected, and he cited the victory by John Carney in Delaware’s at large seat as a positive.
