On the cusp of the 112th Congress, out-of-control spending isn’t the sole difficulty facing Washington today. Don’t get me wrong -- $1.3 trillion in annual deficits and the growing $13 trillion national debt are enormous problems and I’m committed to slashing spending, bringing the top line down and working with the Budget Committee toward a path to balanced budgets. But we must couple spending reductions, elimination of earmarks, and drastic cost-cutting measures with more oversight and scrutiny of our federal agencies.
