On Twitter, condolences for Cuba plane crash, Fort Hood victims
A few political tweeters shared their sympathies on Friday with those affected by Thursday's plane crash in Central Cuba and by the Fort Hood shooting one year ago.
"My condolences go out to those who lost loved ones in the plane crash in #Cuba," tweeted Assistant Secretary of State Arturo Valenzuela. He also sent a version of the message in Spanish.Â
The New York Times reports that all 68 on board the plane were killed.
Meanwhile the Fort Hood shooting anniversary was noted by Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas).
"On todayâs one year anniversary of the shooting at Fort Hood, my thoughts are with the families who lost loved...," he said, linking to a statement.
It read, in part:
"Today we pause to honor the 13 killed, the many wounded and countless others affected by the senseless, violent attack at Fort Hood one year ago. My thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones who are still struggling to cope with this tragedy and loss, as well as the greater Fort Hood community as they honor those lost and the heroes who put themselves in harmâs way on that fateful day.
âAs the largest military installation in the free world, Fort Hood has long been a source of pride for Texans and all Americans. I am pleased to see today that this fine post and the community that supports it have rallied together and emerged even stronger following last yearâs tragedy."Â
The gunman, identified as Army Maj. Nidal Hasan, faces charges of 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder. An ongoing Article 32 procedure will determine whether he should face a court-martial.Â
ADD.: Earlier in the week, two lawmakers from Michigan also noted the passing of famed M.L.B. manager George "Sparky" Anderson, best known for his back-to-back World Series titles in 1975 and 1976 as manager of the Cincinnati Reds.Â
"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of former Tigers' manager Sparky Anderson," tweeted Rep. Thaddeus McCotter (R-Mich.) on Thursday morning.
Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) also tweeted the link to a statement on Anderson.
This post will be updated as necessary.
