India should hold a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council, President Obama told that country’s parliament Monday.

Obama cast giving a permanent Indian seat as a re-shaping of the international order that could lead to a more efficient, effective, credible and legitimate United Nations. He said India and the U.S. should partner on global security, and that with greater power would come greater responsibility for India.

Obama’s call for the permanent seat was met with applause from members of parliament. India is one of several countries, including Brazil, South Africa and Germany, that wants a permanent seat at the UN Security Council.
