The GOPâs new hegemony in the South

The last time Republicans dominated the Southern political landscape as thoroughly as they do today, Union troops occupied the region. Not since Reconstruction, when the Grand Old Party held sway in Dixie in the aftermath of the Civil War, have Republicans all but monopolized governmental power in the region.
