Reflecting on the Republican tsunami that swept the country Nov. 2, Florida’s new Senator-elect Marco Rubio said that his party would be making “a great mistake if we believe that tonight these results are somehow an embrace of the Republican Party.” Along the same lines, Fox news analyst Brit Hume concluded that the GOP was “not the beneficiary of some mandate this time around.” And yet . . . there also was House Minority Whip Eric Cantor proclaiming that the election was a repudiation of the Democrats’ policies and a “second chance” for his party to deliver on its promises. Failure to do so, according to Cantor, might lead to Republicans being “in the wilderness for a very long time.” The congressman apparently does not understand that voters can only reject one party at a time. Just wait your turn and you will eventually be handed (once again) the keys to the kingdom.
